Wonderful large vintage scratch-built wooden model petrol station, probably dating from around the 1930s–40s.
The station has been handmade in wood and retains its wonderfully aged original red, green and blue painted finish. It has a pitched-roof garage building, covered forecourt supported on turned columns, two stylised petrol pumps, a smaller roadside sign and a particularly charming circular “PETROL OPEN” sign set into the front of the building.
The circular sign was originally designed to illuminate from behind, with an electrical switch fitted to the side of the building. The old electrical system is no longer functioning and would require complete rewiring before use.
A fantastic piece of early homemade toy making with a strong folk-art quality. Its large scale, primitive construction and beautifully worn paint make it particularly appealing as a decorative object, as well as for a collection of vintage toys, petroliana or motoring memorabilia.
Good vintage condition with considerable age-related wear throughout. The painted surfaces have scratches, fading, losses and general patina, and there are various small knocks and imperfections to the wooden construction. The illuminated sign is currently non-functioning and the original wiring should not be used. Please see photographs for condition.
