A wonderful vintage wooden artist's field easel, probably dating to the mid-20th century, featuring a folding tripod stand, adjustable canvas support and integrated paint storage box.
Designed for painting outdoors or in the studio, the easel incorporates an ingenious folding construction, with three extending wooden legs supporting a substantial paint box and upright canvas holder. The box opens to reveal metal-lined compartments for storing paints, brushes and other artist's materials, with a further hinged tray providing convenient access while working.
The wooden construction retains a wonderfully characterful surface, covered in old paint splashes, marks and stains accumulated over many years of artistic use. These traces of its working history are particularly appealing and give the easel an authentic studio appearance.
The adjustable supports and metal fittings allow the easel to accommodate different canvas sizes and painting positions. When not in use, the construction folds down for transport or storage.
A practical piece of traditional artist's equipment, equally appealing as a decorative studio accessory or for displaying artwork.
The easel is in well-used vintage condition, with extensive old paint marks, surface scratches, wear to the wooden finish and oxidation to the metal-lined compartments. Some minor splitting and wear to the wooden components is visible. The easel has been opened and erected as photographed, although the full range of adjustments has not been tested.
Dimensions: 42 x 58 x 12cm
Dating: Probably mid-20th century, circa 1940–1970.
