A wonderful Thai bronze statue of Hindu god Indra warrior riding atop a 3 headed elephant.
This statue would have been made using the lost wax technique where the model is first crafted from wax, a clay mold is cast around the wax, the wax emptied and the void filled with molten bronze. Finished with gold gilding.
19cm / 7.5" tall
//
The connection of elephants with water and rain is emphasized in the mythology of Indra, who rides the elephant Airavata when he defeats Vritra. It is believed that the elephant guards one of the points of compass. Airavata also stands at the entrance to Svarga, Indra's palace.
