A very attractive vintage hand-painted oil on canvas after Tamara de Lempicka’s celebrated 1927 Art Deco painting The Dream, also known as Le Rêve or Rafaëla sur fond vert.
The composition depicts a reclining female nude with cropped dark hair, vivid red lips and folded arms, set against the deep green and grey background associated with the original work. The copy captures the strongly stylised modelling, elongated hands, sculptural body and sophisticated glamour that have made Lempicka one of the defining artists of the Art Deco period.
This is not a modern printed reproduction but an individually painted vintage copy on canvas. The reverse bears a G. Rowney & Co Ltd London canvas stamp, and the materials, stretcher and construction all show genuine age. I would date the painting broadly to the mid 20th century.
It is presented in its original-looking narrow gilt frame. The frame has age-related wear and some areas of damage and loss, particularly along the upper edge and corners, as shown in the photographs. There are also the expected marks and signs of age to the painting and frame. Personally I think the slightly worn frame actually suits the piece rather well, although it could of course be reframed if preferred.
A particularly decorative piece with far more presence than a standard printed Lempicka reproduction, and a great choice for an Art Deco, modernist or eclectic interior.
