The wonderfully unusual composition depicts an expansive imagined landscape with distant blue mountains, a fortified town beside a winding river, sailing boats, cottages, a small church and a solitary figure in the foreground. Tall autumnal trees frame the scene to one side, while the deliberately simplified buildings, exaggerated perspective and almost dreamlike landscape give the painting a particularly charming naive or folk-art character.
The painting has a lovely slightly surreal quality, somewhere between a traditional landscape and an imagined fantasy view, with particularly attractive muted shades of blue, green, cream and earthy brown.
Painted on Daler Board for Oils, retaining the original manufacturer’s label to the reverse. The painting is unsigned.
Good vintage condition with general surface marks, small scratches and age-related wear. There are minor imperfections to the edges and reverse of the board. Please see photographs for condition.
