A striking original vintage modernist portrait painting, probably dating from the mid 20th century. The face is constructed from angular, fractured planes in blues, greys and black, surrounded by strong blocks of blue, red, green and ochre. It has a particularly good graphic quality and sits somewhere between Cubism and post-war European modernism.
The painting appears unsigned, although there are faint old pencil inscriptions and markings to the reverse which may relate to a previous owner or attribution. I would avoid trying to interpret these in the listing without firmer evidence.
Presented in a substantial period gilt and painted wooden frame with an inset cream mount. The frame has various chips, scuffs and losses to the gilt finish consistent with age, which I think actually suits the painting rather well.
