An original vintage German anatomical school wall chart depicting the human brain, spinal cord and central nervous system, produced by the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum in Dresden, East Germany, probably dating to the mid-20th century.
An exceptionally decorative example of vintage scientific illustration, featuring five detailed anatomical studies showing different views and cross-sections of the human brain, its internal structures, nervous pathways and spinal cord. The beautifully executed illustrations are printed in muted shades of pink, terracotta, blue and cream against an aged off-white background.
Produced as part of the museum's educational teaching collection, the chart is numbered 2034 and titled Das menschliche Zentralnervensystem (Gehirn und Rückenmark), translating as The Human Central Nervous System (Brain and Spinal Cord). The Deutsches Hygiene-Museum was renowned for producing highly detailed anatomical teaching aids used in schools and medical education throughout the 20th century.
Printed on a large sheet of paper with original black wooden hanging rods to the top and bottom, allowing the chart to be displayed as an impressive wall hanging.
The chart displays considerable age-related wear, including extensive creasing, fold lines, surface marks, areas of discolouration and small edge tears. There are old tape repairs and reinforcement to the reverse, together with some chipped paint and wear to the wooden rods. These imperfections reflect its history as a working educational chart, and it remains a wonderfully characterful decorative object.
Dimensions: 82 × 113 cm (32.3 × 44.5 inches).
