This Eccles Type SL miners safety lamp has a lovely patina and still in working condition.
These lamps were designed to not ignite any gas that miners might encounter, an interesting object that looks great on display.
The Eccles Protector Lamp & Lighting Co Ltd was founded in 1873 by William Edward Teale, who was a chemist and inventor. Teale developed a new type of safety lamp that used a glass cylinder to surround the flame and prevent it from igniting any explosive gases that might be present in the mine.
A piece is missing from the base that would have allowed the lamp to be padlocked shut. This was done to prevent miners opening them up underground to light cigarettes and potentially causing an explosion.
