These lamps were designed to not ignite any gas that miners might encounter, an interesting object that looks great on display. They were usually padlocked shut to prevent them being opened underground.

The lamps were normally padlocked shut to prevent miners using them to light cigarettes whilst underground. The clasp on this one is doesn't seem to close completely anymore.

The Eccles Protector Lamp & Lighting Co Ltd was founded in 1873 by William Edward Teale, who was a chemist and inventor. Teale developed a new type of safety lamp that used a glass cylinder to surround the flame and prevent it from igniting any explosive gases that might be present in the mine.
