A very nice pair of c.1900 decorative Chinese wooden lacquered and gold gilded foo dog carvings. Well carved in high detail. They look as though they were architectural or furniture elements in a past life.
Chinese foo dogs, also known as fu dogs, symbolize protection, prosperity, and success in Chinese culture. They are often displayed in pairs at the entrance of buildings or homes to ward off negative energy and bring good luck. Foo dogs are believed to have protective qualities and are associated with the elements of fire and earth in Chinese mythology.
One of the carvings is missing its feet but the other is complete. Dating from the 19th century.
Each piece 18cm / 7" x 11cm / 4.5" x 9cm / 3"
