A beautiful mid-century Norwegian sterling silver and enamel miniature dish by Aksel Holmsen, produced under the Norne name. The underside is stamped with the Norne maker’s device together with 925S NORWAY, denoting sterling silver. Norne was a mark used by Norwegian silversmith Aksel Holmsen of Sandefjord.
The shallow oval dish is decorated with a particularly attractive hand-enamelled Scandinavian winter landscape. One side depicts a reindeer or elk among snow-covered mountains and fir trees, while the opposing scene shows a figure travelling through the snowy landscape. Above the scenes is finely worked radiating guilloché enamel, giving the sky a wonderful shimmering effect as the light moves across it. Comparable Norne pieces combine sterling silver, guilloché enamel and these miniature wilderness scenes.
A lovely small piece of Norwegian silverwork, useful as a ring dish or pin dish but equally attractive simply displayed as a miniature work of enamel art. Dating approximately to the 1940s–1950s.
