A handsome mid-Victorian coromandel work or sewing box dating to around 1860-1880, with beautifully streaked figuring to the wood and fine decorative shell inlay. The gently rounded lid is centred with a vacant shield-shaped cartouche, while narrow bands of mother-of-pearl and abalone inlay run around the outer edges, giving the box a particularly attractive finish.
The lid opens to a spacious interior with red fabric lining beneath the lid and a series of small loops originally intended to hold sewing or dressing implements. The original fitted removable tray and accessories are no longer present, leaving a useful open storage compartment which would now work very well for jewellery, letters, keepsakes or sewing materials. The pale interior lining appears to have been renewed at some point.
In good antique condition overall with the expected surface marks, scratches and signs of use from well over a century of age. The exterior remains particularly attractive, with strong figuring and colourful shell details.
