A substantial Victorian copper one gallon haystack measure, dating to the late 19th century. The jug has the classic broad pear-shaped body, flared pouring rim, raised circular foot and large curved handle.
Stamped “1 GAL” to the rim and retaining an official lead verification plug with crowned VR mark, indicating that it was checked as an Imperial capacity measure during the reign of Queen Victoria. These large copper measures were associated with commercial dispensing of liquids, particularly ale and other drinks.
The copper has developed a lovely warm aged patina with scattered marks, small dents, surface wear and areas of oxidation consistent with its age and original working use. A particularly decorative piece of Victorian pub and kitchenalia.
