A substantial and highly decorative two-volume early 19th century leather bound edition of The Evangelical Expositor; Or, A Commentary On The Holy Bible by Reverend Thomas Haweis L.L.B and M.D., printed in Glasgow in 1819. These impressive antiquarian volumes are richly evocative of the Georgian period, retaining their original full leather bindings with gilt and morocco spine labels.
The work contains extensive biblical commentary and practical observations intended “for the use of families and private Christians,” and is embellished with engraved plates throughout, including an impressive illustrated title page and portrait engraving of the author. The typography, paper quality, and engraved illustrations give the set a wonderful sense of age and presence.
Both volumes display significant age-related wear consistent with two-hundred-year-old books, including rubbing, scuffing, edge wear, cracking to joints, and losses to areas of leather as shown in the photographs. Internally the books remain highly atmospheric and decorative, with foxing and age toning throughout. A fantastic display set for libraries, studies, dark academia interiors, or collectors of early theology and antiquarian bindings.
