A striking vintage abstract composition, signed “John Piper” at the upper left. The work is constructed from interlocking geometric planes in cobalt blue, turquoise, black, yellow, green and rust red, crossed by a broad white loop and finer linear details.

The painting has a strong British modernist character, with a layered arrangement of colour, shape and texture. It is presented in its substantial period cream-painted wooden frame.

The reverse remains sealed and retains a handwritten inventory label together with an original label for Aldridge Bros, The Little Gallery, Worthing, described as gilders, framemakers, picture liners and artists’ colourmen. The exact medium cannot be confirmed without opening the frame, although it appears to be an original oil or mixed-media painting.

The signature and attribution have not been independently authenticated. It should therefore be described as a painting signed “John Piper”, rather than definitively catalogued as a work by John Piper C.H. The frame, signature and period labels are encouraging details but do not by themselves establish authorship.

The painting appears generally well preserved, with some surface marking and age-related wear. The frame has scratches, small knocks, discolouration and general wear consistent with its age.
