A handsome early 19th century English mahogany sewing or work box dating to the late Georgian / Regency period, circa 1820–30.

The restrained mahogany exterior is raised on small turned bun feet and finished with an oval brass key escutcheon. Opening the hinged lid reveals the particularly appealing original-style fitted interior, with a removable upper tray divided into numerous individual compartments. Several retain their fitted mahogany lids with small turned wooden handles, originally intended for organising thread, needles, pins and other sewing accessories.

The entire fitted tray lifts out to reveal a substantial storage well beneath, retaining pale blue lining, while the inside of the lid is lined in cream fabric. It is a wonderfully practical survivor from the period and could now work equally well as a sewing box, jewellery box or decorative storage casket.
The box has a warm aged mahogany colour and attractive patina. There are scratches, marks, knocks and general surface wear throughout consistent with around two centuries of use. Please study the photographs carefully as these form part of the description.
