A genuine Japanese Meiji-period colour woodblock print by the important artist Ogata Gekkō (1859–1920), depicting Shijō Nōryō or Evening Cool at Shijō Riverbank, from the celebrated series Fujin Fūzoku Zukushi – A Collection of the Customs and Manners of Women.
The design was first published in 1891 and depicts elegantly dressed women enjoying the summer atmosphere beside Kyoto's Kamo River at Shijō. Signed Gekkō (月耕) with the artist's red seal to the upper right.
Gekkō was one of the leading Japanese artists of the Meiji period and was unusual among ukiyo-e designers in being largely self-taught. His work achieved considerable recognition both in Japan and internationally, and examples are held in major museum collections including the British Museum.
The print has considerable age-related creasing, some edge losses and general wear, all clearly visible in the photographs. Despite this, the image remains highly decorative, with particularly attractive restrained colouring in blue, grey and ochre. Presented in a later glazed frame.
