Pair of large and very well carved busts of a Balinese couple wearing traditional headdress. The busts have been expertly carved from tropical hardwood. Dating from the 40's or 50's and signed by the artist, A.A.Fatimah.
Pieces by this renowned sculptor are now extremely desirable because it is rare to find tribal art that has been consistently signed (particularly by one of the few important carvers). Nowadays it is difficult, even for the most discerning of consumers, to find authentic pieces that do not simply pander to tourist demand. In Bali today, whole villages specialize in producing certain styles of work, much like factory lines so that trade can be easily monitored. This has greatly affected the market for genuine, vintage pieces. Fortunately, Fatimah consistently signed his pieces.
In good condition with no damage
