A particularly attractive and substantial mid-19th century writing slope or travelling lap desk, dating to around 1840–1860. The exterior is veneered in richly figured burr walnut, with brass binding, decorative brass-and-dark-metal escutcheon and further decorative inlay to the lid.

Opening to reveal the traditional fitted writing interior, with a large folding writing surface and a series of compartments intended originally for pens, ink bottles and writing accessories. Its unusually generous proportions make this a particularly impressive example, measuring almost 50 cm across.

The combination of beautifully figured timber, dark leather writing surface and brass detailing gives it the classic appearance associated with Victorian travelling and campaign writing furniture. Originally designed to provide a portable writing desk when travelling, pieces of this scale also make excellent decorative objects for a library, study or office.

The slope is in good antique condition overall with considerable character from age and use. There are scratches, knocks, rubbing and general surface wear throughout, together with wear to the writing surface and interior. Sections of the original brass binding are missing, most noticeably around the exterior edges, and some of the original fitted accessories are also no longer present. These losses have been left untouched and form part of the piece's long history. Please refer closely to the photographs for condition.
