A lovely painted panel of Lord Vishnu in beveled frame. Made in Rajasthan, India and dating circa 1920. In his upper hand he holds a conch shell and in his lower a mace. The conch shell produces the 'Om,' the sacred sound of creation. It is a water symbol and is also associated with fertility. The mace is a symbol of strength.
Vishnu is the god of Preservation, the great maintainer who often appears in various incarnations (avatara) to provide salvation for humanity. Some of his best-known avatars, who are tremendously popular and beloved throughout Hindu India, are the gods Krishna and Rama.
