An impressive large vintage Chinese hand-carved hardwood sculpture depicting a traditional fisherman, dating to approximately the early 20th century.
Standing 55 cm tall, the wonderfully characterful figure depicts an elderly bearded fisherman wearing flowing traditional robes, with his hair tied in a topknot and fish suspended beside him. The composition is beautifully detailed, with expressive facial features, finely carved hair and beard, and deeply sculpted folds in the clothing.
Carved from a richly coloured reddish-brown hardwood with a lovely polished finish, the sculpture stands on an integral naturalistic base. The fisherman is a traditional subject in Chinese decorative art, often associated with abundance, prosperity and a harmonious relationship with nature.
A substantial and highly decorative piece of vintage Chinese craftsmanship, particularly suited to an eclectic interior or collection of Asian art and sculpture.
In good vintage condition with some minor age-related wear.
Height: 55 cm (21.7 inches).
