A handsome set of three antique leather-bound volumes from Hugh Blair's celebrated Sermons, published in London in 1809. Included are Volumes I, IV and V of the five-volume series. Hugh Blair (1718–1800) was one of the most influential Scottish clergymen and literary figures of the Enlightenment, serving as Professor of Rhetoric and Belles Lettres at the University of Edinburgh and becoming renowned throughout Britain and America for his sermons and writings.

Bound in full calf leather with red morocco spine labels and gilt tooling, the books display the rich patina and character expected of early 19th-century bindings. The volumes retain their original period appearance and make an attractive display grouping for a library, study, desk or country house interior. Ownership inscriptions dated 1853 provide an additional layer of provenance and historical interest.

The books remain highly decorative examples of Georgian bookbinding and would appeal to collectors of Scottish history, theology, Enlightenment literature and antique leather-bound books. They also work exceptionally well as decorative objects within the continuing old money, dark academia and English country house interior trends.

Condition is commensurate with age. The bindings show wear, rubbing and scuffing throughout, with losses and wear to the spine labels. Pages display age toning and occasional marks consistent with over two centuries of use. Please examine photographs carefully for condition.

Each volume measures approximately 8.7 x 5.5 x 1.4 inches (22 x 14 x 3.5 cm).
