Beautiful oval brass planter with hand-chased floral and foliate scrollwork running all the way around the body, sitting on a rolled foot with a softly domed base. The metal shows a deep, honest patina with a mix of brass glow and darker oxidised tones, plus mineral spotting and water marks inside from years of use as a planter. No nonsense reproduction shine here – it has that proper old country house look you can’t fake.
This shape (long and low) is perfect on a fireplace hearth filled with cut greenery, ivy, or dried hydrangeas, but it also works down the centre of a dining table, on a window ledge, or on a console under a mirror. The floral banding feels late Edwardian / interwar in taste, and pieces like this were popular in English and continental interiors well into the mid 20th century, especially in winter gardens and drawing rooms. It sits right in the “old money” / country manor lane, and it leans castlecore and maximalist when you load it with trailing plants.
Condition is vintage with age-related tarnish, light pitting to the interior, and general surface wear from real use. No structural issues. Watertight enough for a liner or nursery pots dropped straight in (which is how these were usually used, so you don’t have to plant directly into the metal).
Size is approx 44.5 cm long x 24 cm wide x 15 cm high, which is about 17.5 in x 9.4 in x 5.9 in.
