A wonderfully decorative set of antique shop counter scales by W. & T. Avery Ltd of Birmingham, probably dating from around the early 20th century.
The scales have a substantial cast metal base with an aged bronzed finish, supporting the original balance mechanism. One side is fitted with a deep metal weighing pan while the opposite platform carries a graduated stack of period weights.
The beam retains the attractive original transfer labels reading “W. & T. Avery Ltd” and “Birmingham”, now nicely worn through more than a century of use. W. & T. Avery were one of Britain's most important manufacturers of commercial weighing equipment, producing scales for grocers, shops and other trades.
A particularly characterful example with a lovely untouched surface, aged paint and patination throughout. It would make an excellent decorative piece in a kitchen, shop, restaurant or industrial interior.
Good antique condition with considerable age-related wear. There is rubbing, tarnishing, oxidation, paint loss and wear to the original maker's transfers.
The base measures approximately 32 x 12 cm / 12.6 x 4.7 inches, with an overall height of approximately 33 cm / 13 inches.
