An unusual antique games board dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, with a wonderfully decorative geometric design worked beneath glass.
The centre is formed as a chequered chess or draughts board in black and mottled gold tones, surrounded by concentric bands of bold geometric ornament incorporating tartan-like grids, red and green detailing, stars and reflective metallic sections. The whole composition has a fantastic folk-art quality and is much more decorative than the usual plain timber games board.
Set within its original-looking simple mahogany frame with boarded timber backing. It works equally well as a functional games board or simply displayed as a piece of antique graphic folk art.
There is age-related wear throughout including marks and knocks to the wooden frame, all adding to its character.
Measures approximately 49 × 49 cm / 19 1/4 × 19 1/4 inches.
