A wonderful late Victorian adjustable reading or music stand, dating to around the late 19th century.

The stand combines a heavy decorative cast iron base with sculpted paw feet, an ornate twisted lower column and brass upper fittings. The central column is telescopic, allowing the height to be adjusted, while the long articulated brass arm can be swung into position and secured with the original thumb screws.

The wooden book rest is mounted on an adjustable brass joint so that its angle can also be altered. Small brass supports to the front and sides are designed to retain a book, document or sheet music while in use.

These ingenious freestanding reading stands were produced during the Victorian period for use beside chairs, desks and beds, and could equally be used as lecterns or music stands. A particularly decorative and functional piece of Victorian furniture, with lovely untouched patination to the brass and iron.

Good antique condition with general surface wear, marks, oxidation and patination throughout consistent with age and use. The various adjustable components appear substantially complete. Please see photographs for condition.

The wooden book rest measures approximately 25 x 23 cm / 9.8 x 9.1 inches. Overall height is adjustable.
