A wonderfully characterful late 19th-century hand-worked copper water jug or ewer, dated 1886.

The jug has a large rounded body with a narrow cylindrical neck, distinctive ribbed domed cover and long iron handle. The copper has been constructed and joined by hand, with visible hammering, riveted details and a decorative zig-zag seam around the neck.

Most unusually, the neck is stamped with the inscription “SOY DE ESTEBAN JYL MORENO 1886”, giving the piece a definite 19th-century date and suggesting Spanish origin. The inscription roughly translates as “I belong to Esteban Jyl Moreno”.

A particularly striking piece of antique utilitarian metalware, now highly decorative in its own right. The copper has developed a rich, deep patina with areas of verdigris, old marks, dents and irregularities throughout, all contributing to its character.
