A handsome antique English mahogany tea caddy dating to the Regency period, circa 1820.
Made from richly coloured mahogany, the caddy has a classic sarcophagus-shaped form with a stepped and moulded hinged lid, raised plinth base and small bracket feet. An attractive brass carrying handle is mounted centrally to the top, with the original lock fitted to the front.
The lid opens to reveal a three-compartment interior, originally intended for the storage of different varieties of loose tea. The underside of the lid retains its old green baize lining. The combination of sarcophagus form, three-part interior and carrying handle is characteristic of Regency tea caddies made during the early decades of the 19th century.
A particularly attractive decorative antique with a lovely warm colour and accumulated surface patina.
Good antique condition overall with expected scratches, rubbing, knocks and surface marks from approximately two centuries of use. The interior is incomplete, with the original compartments, general wear and staining internally. No key is present.
Measures approximately 24 x 15 x 14 cm / 9.4 x 5.9 x 5.5 inches.
