The drawers have decorative brass backplates and floral brass handles, while the side cupboard would originally have held pipes and other smoking accessories.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eA particularly appealing feature is the ingenious concealed locking mechanism. The vertical wooden strip on the side hinges outward, releasing the drawers so that they can be opened. When closed, it discreetly secures them without an obvious conventional lock—a clever and unusual piece of cabinetmaking.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe oak has developed a warm, richly aged colour and displays attractive wear from use. Presented in good antique condition, with surface scratches, marks, small areas of wear, staining beneath the upper lid and natural tarnishing to the metal fittings.
