An unusual late Victorian or Edwardian oak smoker’s cabinet, dating from around 1890–1910. The compact tabletop cabinet has an architectural form, with a domed lifting tobacco box above two drawers and a panelled side cupboard.

The upper box retains its original metal-lined interior, designed for storing tobacco. The drawers have decorative brass backplates and floral brass handles, while the side cupboard would originally have held pipes and other smoking accessories.

A particularly appealing feature is the ingenious concealed locking mechanism. The vertical wooden strip on the side hinges outward, releasing the drawers so that they can be opened. When closed, it discreetly secures them without an obvious conventional lock—a clever and unusual piece of cabinetmaking.

The oak has developed a warm, richly aged colour and displays attractive wear from use. Presented in good antique condition, with surface scratches, marks, small areas of wear, staining beneath the upper lid and natural tarnishing to the metal fittings. The drawers, cupboard, upper lid and concealed locking mechanism all operate as intended.
