A beautiful C.1900 Indian statue of Shiva dancing inside a burning ring, known as the Nataraja. As a symbol, Shiva Nataraja is a brilliant invention. It combines in a single image Shiva's roles as creator, preserver, and destroyer of the universe and conveys the Indian conception of the never-ending cycle of time.
Aldous Huxley said of the Dancing Shiva, “the whole thing is there, you see. The world of space and time, and matter and energy, the world of creation and destruction, the world of psychology…We (the West) don’t have anything remotely approaching such a comprehensive symbol, which is both cosmic and psychological, and spiritual.”
Made using the ancient lost wax method where the subject is first crated from wax and a clay mold is formed around the wax.
