A finely detailed small bronze sculpture depicting Hermes at rest, also known as Seated Mercury, after one of the celebrated sculptures of classical antiquity. The original figure was discovered at the Villa of the Papyri at Herculaneum in the 18th century and became a particularly popular subject for Grand Tour bronze reductions. UK Architectural Heritage
The figure is beautifully modelled with a dark aged patina, particularly nice detail to the face, hair, hands and naturalistic rocky seat. It is mounted on a simple square pale pink marble plinth which gives the piece a very elegant neoclassical appearance.
Likely Italian and dating to the early/mid 20th century, made in the long-established Grand Tour tradition. Unsigned as far as I can see.
Overall in good vintage condition with age-related surface wear and patination. The felt covering beneath the marble base has losses as photographed.
Measures approximately 13 cm high × 10 cm × 10 cm (5.1 × 3.9 × 3.9 inches).
