A delicate antique portrait miniature depicting a young sitter with neatly parted brown hair and a softly rendered pale pink garment. The portrait has been executed in pencil and watercolour on a thin sheet, housed behind glass within an oval gilt-metal slip.
The rectangular black lacquered frame is likely papier-mâché and retains its decorative foliate and acorn-form hanging mount. This combination of an ebonised rectangular frame, oval bezel and acorn hanger is characteristic of portrait-miniature framing from the early 19th century.
The sitter is unidentified and no signature is visible. The portrait remains wonderfully atmospheric, with gentle fading and muted colouring that add to its period character.
There is age-related fading, foxing, dust and small marks beneath the glass, including a noticeable dark spot near the sitter’s eye. The frame has scratches, fine surface cracking and wear to the gilt slip, while the reverse covering is worn and partially missing around the edges.
