Compact 19th-century French snuff or trinket box, turned from richly figured horn with a warm caramel and chocolate glow. The lid is set with a cast portrait medal of Louis Philippe I, Roi Des Français, in profile, with surrounding inscription and the date “7 Aout 1830” picked out around the edge – the year he became king after the July Revolution. Inside, the box is lined with a beautiful mottled horn (or horn-effect) veneer in amber, honey and dark brown, giving a jewel-like depth when it catches the light. It’s a lovely little piece of French royal history that sits perfectly on a desk, dressing table or in a cabinet of curiosities.

Condition is good for its age with honest wear: light surface marks and small scuffs to the horn, a slightly darker worn patch to the top, and age-related patina and rubbing to the medal. The lining shows some fine scratching and small nicks but remains intact and very decorative. The lid screws on and off smoothly and the box displays well.
