A striking large Chinese glazed pottery architectural ornament, modelled as a powerful mythical beast combining characteristics of the dragon and qilin. The creature is depicted with an open tooth-filled mouth, curling mane, muscular elongated body and dramatically raised tail, picked out in rich green, amber-brown and cream glazes.

The figure is formed upon a substantial rectangular architectural base and appears to have been made in the tradition of Chinese ceramic roof and ridge ornaments used on temples and important buildings. Such mythical creatures were both decorative and auspicious, traditionally associated with protection and the warding off of harmful influences. Comparable glazed architectural beasts are particularly associated with the Ming and later periods; I have conservatively described this example simply as antique rather than assigning it a specific dynasty.

It is an unusually large and highly decorative example, measuring approximately 52 cm long × 45 cm high × 16 cm wide (20.5 × 17.7 × 6.3 inches). The combination of deep emerald green and warm ochre glaze gives it a fantastic sculptural presence and it works particularly well as a standalone piece of decorative art.

The piece displays age-related wear, glaze loss and minor chips. There are significant old losses to the projecting ears/horns at the rear of the head, clearly photographed. There are other smaller areas of wear and loss consistent with an architectural ceramic of this type and age. Despite this, the principal face, body, tail and overall silhouette remain extremely impressive.
