A substantial antique Chinese carved wooden figure of Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of compassion, seated upon a carved lotus pedestal.

The figure retains extensive traces of its original gilt and polychrome decoration, including particularly attractive red and gold floral ornament across the robes and headdress. The aged surface, areas of exposed timber and softened gilding give it a very characterful appearance.

Likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The figure is carved in several sections, with a separate lotus-form base.

There is age-related wear throughout, including losses to the fingers of the raised hand, small chips and losses around the lotus base, rubbing to the gilding and painted decoration, and other marks consistent with considerable age. Please see photographs for condition.
