A wonderfully atmospheric antique portrait depicting an elderly bearded man wearing a traditional soft brimmed hat, painted in subdued blue, grey and earthy tones.

Probably Continental European and dating from around the turn of the 20th century, the sitter has the appearance of an Alpine or rural peasant figure rather than a conventional formal portrait. The softly painted face and restrained palette give the picture considerable character.

The painting is presented in its particularly attractive original period frame, constructed in dark hardwood with a gently shaped outline and decorated with applied gilt composition ornament to the corners and edges. The combination of rustic timber and scrolling gilt decoration gives the frame a distinctive late 19th / early 20th century Art Nouveau character.

The painting itself is in good condition. The frame shows expected age-related wear, including cracking and small losses to some of the applied gilt ornament, surface marks and general patination. These have been left untouched and form part of the antique character of the piece.
