An unusual and characterful Black Forest page turner with a finely carved dog's head to the handle, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. These pieces were typically carved in the Black Forest region of Germany or Switzerland and were used for turning pages of delicate books or sheet music without soiling them.
This example features a crisply modeled head—likely bulldog—with expressive eyes, ears, and deeply incised fur detailing. The head is carved from a darker wood, set atop a polished cylindrical shaft that tapers into a lighter, worn blade.
There is honest wear to the blade and one of the glass eyes is missing but it remains structurally sound and full of charm.
Measurements:
11.5" long (29 cm)
