A particularly attractive late 19th century Anglo-Indian jewellery or trinket box, made in India from dark hardwood and decorated with contrasting applied bone mounts. The long domed casket form is embellished with bone bands, rounded studs and pierced decorative escutcheons, giving it a striking black-and-white appearance.
This type of dark hardwood and bone decoration is characteristic of Anglo-Indian boxes produced in India during the 19th century, with closely related domed boxes associated with Vizagapatam work. Comparable examples are described as Anglo-Indian hardwood boxes with bone inlay.
The interior retains its vivid blue fabric lining, which makes a lovely contrast with the dark exterior. A very decorative piece that would work well as a jewellery box, keepsake box or simply as an object for display.
There is age-related wear throughout, including rubbing and losses to the dark finish, some wear and losses to the applied bone decoration and wear/discolouration to the interior lining.
