A charming antique 19th-century painted portrait depicting a young woman in profile, wearing a dark headdress, red necklace and richly coloured period dress with voluminous sleeves.
The portrait appears to be finely painted in watercolour on on paper and is presented beneath glass in a handsome period wooden frame. The broad ebonised outer moulding surrounds an aged gilt inner slip, giving the small painting the appearance of a traditional portrait miniature.
There is some age-related fading, discolouration and light surface marking to the painting. The frame has rubbing, scratches and small losses to the black finish and gilding, all consistent with age. The reverse retains an old wooden backing board and brass suspension ring.
Measures approximately 22.5 x 20 cm, or 8 7/8 x 7 7/8 inches, including the frame.
