A beautiful antique Japanese seated Buddha, believed to date to the 19th century, circa 1850–1900, depicting Amida Nyorai (Amitabha), the Buddha of Infinite Light.
The figure is seated cross-legged in a traditional meditation posture, with both hands resting together in the lap. The beautifully modelled face has a peaceful expression, with gently closed eyes, elongated earlobes and tightly curled hair.
Cast in metal, believed to be bronze, the sculpture retains remnants of its original gilded finish across the flowing robes, which are decorated with intricate scrolling borders and finely detailed folds. The face and hair have a rich, dark patina, creating a striking contrast with the warmer tones of the robes.
Amida Buddha is an important figure in Japanese Buddhism, particularly within the Pure Land tradition, representing infinite light and compassion. Sculptures of this kind were traditionally produced for Buddhist devotional use, including domestic and temple shrines.
The figure has a wonderfully aged appearance, with extensive rubbing and losses to the gilded surface, areas of discolouration and general surface wear consistent with age.
Height: 23.5 cm (9.3 inches).
