An impressive antique bronze sculpture depicting the Buddhist goddess Green Tara, dating to the 19th century and originating from Nepal or Tibet.
The finely cast figure is seated in a relaxed, asymmetrical posture upon an elaborate lotus throne supported by mythical animals. She wears flowing robes, decorative jewellery and an elaborate headdress surmounted by a small seated figure, with flowering lotus stems rising alongside her shoulders.
The beautifully detailed pedestal incorporates sculpted animals, ornamental beading and overlapping lotus petals, creating a particularly intricate and sculptural composition.
Green Tara is one of the most revered figures in Himalayan Buddhism, traditionally associated with compassion, protection and the removal of obstacles.
Cast in bronze with a rich, dark patina and surviving traces of gilding, particularly visible across the figure and raised decorative details. The surface displays natural wear, areas of oxidation and rubbing to the gilding consistent with considerable age.
The underside retains a metal closure plate.
An attractive and substantial piece of traditional Himalayan Buddhist metalwork, with excellent decorative and sculptural presence.
Height: 20 cm (8 inches).
