A beautiful antique 12-inch terrestrial globe dating to the 1920s, produced by Geographia (1923) Ltd of 55 Fleet Street, London, circa 1923–1926.
The globe features wonderfully detailed and colourful cartography, illustrating the world as it appeared in the years following the First World War. Countries, territories and colonial possessions are individually coloured, with the British Empire highlighted in red. The map includes geographical features, railway networks, ocean currents and principal shipping routes, together with distances in nautical miles.
The original printed cartouche reads "Geographia 12 Inch Terrestrial Globe" and bears the publisher's name and London address. The historical borders and place names provide a fascinating snapshot of the interwar world, including the newly established European states and colonial territories of the period.
The globe is mounted within a metal meridian on an elegant turned wooden pedestal with a circular stepped base, retaining its original dark ebonised finish. The richly aged colours and warm patina give it a particularly attractive appearance.
A wonderful example of early 20th-century British cartography, equally appealing as a historical geographical instrument or as a decorative object for a study, library or living room.
The globe is in good decorative antique condition, displaying considerable age-related wear, including areas of rubbing, surface marks, discolouration, fine cracking and small losses to the printed paper surface. The wooden stand also displays wear and areas of paint loss, consistent with age and use.
Overall height: 50 cm (19.7 inches).
Globe diameter: approximately 30.5 cm (12 inches).
