A striking vintage hand-knotted wool rug from Turkey, dating to around early to mid 20th century and stylistically consistent with rugs woven in the Kars region of northeastern Anatolia. The design features two large ivory diamond medallions set against a warm brown field, surrounded by strongly drawn geometric motifs and multiple borders in muted rust, blue, cream, green and black.
The bold, simplified geometry gives the rug a particularly graphic appearance, reflecting the strong Caucasian influence found in many Kars rugs. The relatively restrained earthy palette makes it unusually easy to place within both traditional and contemporary interiors, and it would work particularly well alongside modernist, Bauhaus, Arts & Crafts or eclectic antique furniture.
Hand knotted in wool with a substantial pile and traditionally finished edges. The reverse clearly shows the hand-knotted construction and natural irregularities associated with village weaving. Presented in good vintage condition overall with the expected minor wear, variation and character from age and use.
Measures approximately 168 x 133 cm / 66 x 52 in / 5 ft 6 in x 4 ft 4 in.
