Vintage hand-knotted wool prayer rug with a beautifully drawn stepped niche design, deep madder and aubergine ground, and small-scale ivory and indigo tribal detailing throughout. This is a wonderfully moody piece with the kind of dense border work and compact geometry that makes Baluch rugs so easy to use in layered interiors. It has a strong dark, collected look that works especially well with castlecore, dark academia, old money and more maximalist rooms.
Likely Afghan Baluch (Baluchi), probably from the western Afghanistan / Herat-Farah weaving tradition, and dating to the mid 20th century. The wool handle, palette and prayer format all point in that direction.
Condition is good vintage overall with clear age-related wear that should be noted. There is wear and fraying to the ends, some edge wear, light unevenness and general surface wear consistent with age and use, all visible in the photographs. Nothing here feels out of place for a rug of this type, and it still displays very well with plenty of life left in it.
