A particularly striking vintage Caucasian Fachralo Kazak prayer rug, hand knotted in wool and probably dating from around the mid 20th century.
The design is based around a bold architectural prayer niche, with a large blue mihrab set against a warm red ground and filled with strongly drawn geometric motifs. Particularly interesting are the pair of stylised hand motifs towards the upper end of the field, a feature found on traditional Caucasian Kazak prayer rugs. Fachralo rugs are especially associated with structured prayer-niche compositions and strong contrasts of red, blue and ivory.
I would identify this as a Fachralo Kazak weaving from the southwest Caucasus, most likely the area of present-day Georgia. Fachralo is a historic weaving village south of Tbilisi and is particularly known for this type of prayer rug.
The rug has a wonderful palette of faded brick red, strong turquoise-blue, ivory, burgundy and smaller green accents. Multiple geometric borders surround the central field, including a particularly attractive broad ivory border of angular motifs. The reverse clearly shows the hand-knotted construction and the colours remain considerably stronger on the back.
Good vintage condition with age-related fading, wear and minor irregularities throughout, all adding to its character. The pile is relatively low in places but the overall design remains crisp and vibrant. Please see photographs for condition.
