A beautiful antique hand-knotted Caucasian rug from the Shirvan region of modern-day Azerbaijan, probably dating from around 1900–1920.
The rug has a wonderfully intricate geometric design centred on a deep indigo-blue field, with a sequence of large angular medallions surrounded by smaller stylised floral, animal and geometric motifs. The field is enclosed by an unusually rich series of borders, including a broad ivory band filled with colourful stylised flowers and leaves.
The palette is particularly attractive, combining faded brick red, indigo and softer blue, ivory, green and earthy brown tones. More than a century of use has mellowed the colours beautifully and given the rug considerable character.

The rug is in genuinely antique condition with extensive age-related wear and areas of low pile, wear to the fringes and edges, and a small hole which will be clearly photographed. There are also the irregularities, colour variation and surface wear expected of a rug of this age. Despite this, it remains structurally decorative and presents beautifully, with the wear contributing greatly to its character.
