A richly worked 19th-century Japanese papier-mâché charger, hand-decorated in warm umber and black with a samurai-and-courtiers scene, the rim detailed with tiny bone inlay accents that catch the light.
The surface has that characteristic, gently lustrous lacquered finish of papier-mâché rather than metal, with no gilding present. Reverse in plain dark finish. Honest age throughout with small scuffs, fine scratches and minor edge rubs as shown; presents beautifully on a stand or hung as wall art and suits today’s Japandi and old-money interiors.
Diameter 31 cm (12.2 in).
