A striking original East German educational wall chart dating from 1984, illustrating the processes taking place within a nuclear reactor. Titled Vorgänge im Reaktor, the chart uses an exceptionally bold schematic design of coloured particles, control rods, coolant paths and reactor components against a deep black ground.
Published in Berlin by Volk und Wissen Volkseigener Verlag, one of the principal educational publishers of the former German Democratic Republic, and printed by INTERDRUCK in Leipzig. The lower margin states “1. Auflage · Ausgabe 1984” and gives an editorial completion date of 14 September 1982. It was officially approved as a teaching aid by the GDR Ministry for Education.
The graphic quality is particularly strong, with its combination of black, metallic copper tones, turquoise, yellow, orange and white giving it a distinctly Atomic Age / industrial Modernist appearance. Although originally produced as a physics teaching chart, it now works brilliantly as a large piece of graphic wall art and would suit an industrial, Brutalist, modernist or science-themed interior.
The chart remains mounted between its original metal rollers, allowing it to be hung directly from the wall. There is age and classroom wear throughout, including creasing and undulation to the sheet, small edge tears, surface marks and general wear, all visible in the photographs. Despite this, the colours remain strong and the overall presentation is excellent.
Measures approximately 115 × 78 cm / 45.3 × 30.7 inches, including the rollers.
