An atmospheric original oil on canvas still life, signed indistinctly to the lower right and dated 1926. The composition depicts a game bird laid across a table alongside a large handled bottle or decanter, fruit, vegetables and an onion, painted in a wonderfully muted palette of grey, green, brown and earthy red.
The painting has a loose, expressive quality and a particularly appealing interwar feel. The artist’s signature is clearly present but I have not been able to confidently decipher it, so I would prefer not to make an attribution.
Presented in a decorative dark moulded frame with a repeating foliate border. There is considerable age-related craquelure and general surface wear to the painting, along with a couple of small punctures/tears to the canvas, all photographed. The frame also shows the expected knocks and wear from age. Despite this, it remains a very decorative and characterful period painting.
Overall framed size approximately 73 × 54 cm (28.7 × 21.3 in).
