A magnificent large-format Victorian family Bible, published by Blackie and Son of Glasgow, Edinburgh and London in 1844.

The Imperial Family Bible contains the Old and New Testaments according to the Authorized Version, together with extensive critical, explanatory and practical notes, references, chronological tables and indexes. It is illustrated throughout with a series of finely engraved plates after works of ancient and contemporary art.

Bound in its original deep brown full leather binding with blind-tooled borders and decoration, raised spine bands and gilt “Imperial Bible” lettering. The page edges are gilt, giving the enormous volume a particularly impressive appearance. A wonderful decorative antique book as well as an interesting piece of early Victorian publishing.

The book is in well-used antique condition with considerable rubbing, scuffing and surface wear to the leather. The spine and joint have previously been repaired and the repair remains visible, with further wear and losses around this area. There is age-related foxing and spotting internally, particularly to some of the illustrated leaves and preliminary pages, along with general age toning and occasional marks.
